While I don't yet understand the root cause of the problem, the curious observation is that changing the Start Type of our PCI card driver to BOOT_START (which I know is not proper for a PNP driver) seems to avoid the problem. Sentai's Mawaru Penguindrum subs are almost a perfect readout of the dub script, so basically you're hearing the Japanese audio and reading closed-captioning for the dub. Sometimes that works -- Gurren Lagann's subs are a slightly more faithful version of the dub script, and that didn't bother me -- but Penguindrum's dub script is super bad.
Pretty much any fansub is better, and if you've already watch the show that way, you're probably in for a letdown. The number one nitpick is that they changed 'Survival Strategy' to 'Survival Tactic,' which is terrible. Almost as bad as 'Klesha Bringers' in the subs for Katanagatari. They were denied the rights to license the OVA by the Japanese Do you have evidence for this? Sentai's statement: That particular episode, what people call the 'OVA episode,' belongs to someone else, not the original licensor that we did business with to acquire the 12 episode series. I can't say with absolute certainty that we won't get it in the future, but for now it is exclusive to Japan.
Does not actually say 'we tried to license it and they said no.' All it says is: • We licensed the 12 episode series from company A • The director's cut is from company B • Our release will not have it • Therefore, it is exclusive to Japan If they had actually been denied the right to license it, I think they would have said that clearly so people wouldn't blame them. I agree that the Japanese companies and their stinginess with licenses are the main culprits here. Who knows, the owners of the rights to the OVA may have said 'We want the same licensing fee for this one episode that you gave to the other company for the whole show,' or some other BS. On the other hand, Sentai has a reputation for saying 'well, that's good enough' instead of putting out top-quality content. Funimation is more consistent and its products aren't Aniplex-level expensive either, so I don't understand why Sentai's people just can't bother to do a good job.
They could wait, instead of cashing in on an unfinished show. There's gonna be a second season, so it's not like Gatchaman Crowds will fade from memory and sell fewer copies in the future.
Either way, they made a bad business decision by jumping on the license for an incomplete product, and instead of waiting till they can offer something better, they expect us to pay for a half-assed release anyway, which is typical Sentai, IMO. The packaging looks cool, at least. That shade of green is awesome. I've kind of filled this thread with my questions about Sentai, but I have to know, did you buy the DVD or Blu-ray release of Clannad? Also what exactly was wrong with their release of Clannad besides the god awful dub?
